Schicksalsgemeinschaft

2022

A Volvo 940, a station wagon from 1997, is marked by the years of its use: signs of wear and tear and a childish painting on the hood testify to its usefulness as a family car. Now, however, dense fog drifts through the interior of the car, lightning outlines the passenger seats and the steering wheel, while massive thunder sounds shake the body.

The work Schicksalsgemeinschaft (community of destiny) is about the social space within the steel frame, which is built to be in motion. Naturally, it is a closed space: when it is in motion, it makes itself inadequate from the outside and at the same time locks up its interior. Here, a storm is raging in this space. A storm has unexpectedly moved over the passengers, to which they are now helplessly exposed.

Dreams of mobility, community, travel and privacy accumulate in such passenger cabins and constitute positive memories. However, when social dynamics inside brew into a storm, the movable shelter puts passengers in a hopeless predicament.
